The Wonder Years

Growing up “The Wonder Years” with Fred Savage was one of the first television shows that ignited my love for coming-of-age stories. So to my surprise when it was announced that ABC greenlit a reboot of this 80’s sitcom I was a little torn - because why would you do a remake when there are so many other stories to be told? The plot twist, however is that this version of “The Wonder Years” would star “The Williams”, an African American family of five in Montgomery, Alabama.

Every episode centers around “Dean”, his family and friends as they face the challenges of the black experience during the late 1960’s. This tumultuous era and zip code will definitely have a very DIFFERENT perspective from the original series. I secretly wished that they would portray each family from each series simultaneously as they navigate their lives in two very different Americas.

“The (new) Wonder Years” was soooo much better than I anticipated. It quickly became a fan-favorite. It was just announced that the show won a prestigious Peabody Award. Each year, 30 Peabody Awards are given to films, documentaries, news, podcast, radio, children’s programs, public service programming and television shows that powerfully reflect the pressing social issues and the vibrant emerging voices of our day. This surprise award winning, hit show was renewed for a second season. The returning stars include Elisha “EJ” Williams (Dean), Dulé Hill, Saycon Sengbloh and Laura Kariuki. It is produced by Lee Daniels (Precious, The Bultler, Empire) and is hilariously narrated by Don Cheadle (as Dean).

Currently you can catch up on the 1st season on demand via ABC or Hulu. “The Wonder Years” is both entertaining and educational which makes it perfect for the entire family. Catch up during the Summer so you won’t have to wonder what’s going on with the Williams crew during the new season this fall.
