Incredible Teen Myla Johnson

Hi Noire Family, In honor of Women’s month, I decided to feature a young woman that I have the esteemed pleasure of calling sister. Recently named the Louisiana Beta Vice President, Myla Johnson is making waves as she prepares for Nationals. Something that began as an attempt to step out of her comfort zone has led Myla to new heights, representing the state in a national campaign for the National Beta Convention in Nashville. I was able to chat with Myla about her thoughts on this journey and what her involvement means for those around her and those to follow. Here is what she had to say:

Noire: Myla, what motivated you to run for State Beta Vice President?

Myla: I was motivated from years of seeing people older than me taking on leadership roles in the club that I love. I was inspired by them and was fortunate enough to receive great advice and encouragement from them when I expressed interest in the role of Vice President. Knowing the importance of the position, I was extremely nervous and debated on the decision for a while.

Noire: How did it feel when your peers selected you to represent the entire state in that roles?

Myla: Amazing! I was truly honored and beyond humbled by that experience. I was just happy to meet so many amazingly unique people at the convention! To know that they enjoyed me just as much as I enjoyed meeting them felt and still feels like a dream. I can’t wait to meet and create bonds with even more people in Nashville.

Noire: What changes are you looking forward to bringing to the organization in your role as Louisiana’s Beta Vice President?

Myla: I look forward to creating more service opportunities for our local and National beta, if given the opportunity, to meet in person and online. I also want to encourage more betas to get involved at their schools and within their communities. I want my Beta contributions to act as a catalyst for innovation and foster new ideas within the club.

Noire: What is your thought process going into nationals with hopes of claiming that h title of National Beta Vice President?

Myla: My thought process is to continue to prove to myself that I can always do more and try, to the best of my ability, have no regrets. My goal is to have fun, create new friendships with the people that I meet at the convention, and to represent my state as best I can. I just kept reminding myself to be optimistic and to celebrate the winners, even if I am not one of them. It’s just an honor to be selected to compete and campaign.

Noire: What advice would you give to small town girls like yourself with similar goals and aspirations?

Myla: My advice would be to ask questions to those with experience in whatever position that you are interested in. Ask. Ask. Ask! Even if it’s as simple as how you can sign up. I don’t think /anyone should put limits on themselves. Only you can determine what you can or cannot do. Although it’s cliché, I really believe that sky is the limit when it comes to your dreams or goals.

Noire: Lastly, what does women’s month mean to you?

Myla: Women’s month is a reminder that I can be a change maker just like all of the women before me. It makes me want to be as much of an inspiration to other girls as the women in my life have been to me.

As Myla’s older sister, I could not be prouder of her. I truly cannot wait to see what the future holds for her campaign trail and year of leadership as Beta Vice President for the state of Louisiana. Her ambition and unapologetic drive is the embodiment of what Women’s month represents. To everyone reading this, look at the women in your circle. Acknowledge and celebrate them!
