NOIRE Kwanzaa Honorees: Latosha Brown, Black Voters Matter, Umoja (Unity)

"To strive for and maintain unity in the family, community, nation, and race."

LaTosha Brown, co-founder and executive director of the voting rights group Black Voters Matter (based in Atlanta), has proven to be among the most effective community organizer, political strategist, and consultant in the country. Beyond of the organization’s name, she has brought together voters from several non-profit organizations and grassroots initiatives in the community, executing significant voter registration and get out the vote efforts and helping voters and their critical common interests simply win.

Brown’s work is much credited with the key victories in Georgia during the 2020 Presidential elections, where the Joe Biden/Kamala Harris ticket won the state and Democrats Rafael Warnock and Jon Ossoff captured their respective Senate seats. In 2017, BVM’s influence was instrumental in Senator Doug Jones major upset win over Roy Moore.

Brown’s roots run deep as a Selma, Alabama native and Auburn University at Montgomery graduate. She co-founded BVM with Cliff Albright in 2016.

Brown’s work is not done, given today’s political climate. Her services – and unifying spirit – will be needed more than ever before in the history of our democracy.
