King Richard - Through The Lens Of Venus’ And Serena’s Dad

This HIGHLY ANTICIPATED film is finally here.

The two-time Oscar nominee Will Smith created some online buzz about his upcoming portrayal of Richard Williams, the father and childhood coach of tennis icons Venus and Serena Williams. Some fans were a little salty that “The Fresh Prince” was chosen for this role. They felt that he didn’t look ANYTHING like Venus and Serena’s Dad. There was even a fan generated list of other aesthetically “qualified” actors circulating the blogs.

But once the King Richard trailer hit the newsfeeds, the chatter began to cease.

The film documents the lives of two of our greatest athletes’ climb to worldwide and historic success while simultaneously battling straight-out racism and sexism. Venus and Serena were trained and groomed by their no-nonsense, non-tennis playing Dad, who made waves of his own against the traditional professional tennis system.

We, the sports world and Black America have all witnessed the Williams sisters’ extraordinary road from inner-city Compton, California to superstardom, which was accomplished in a very unconventional and sometimes controversial way.

King Richard is an inspiring true story and in true Will Smith form, he was able to channel the “King” in a very convincing way.

Will’s co-stars include the fabulous Aunjanue Ellis; Saniyya Sidney as Venus Williams; Demi Singleton as Serena Williams; Tony Goldwyn and Jon Bernthal.

King Richard hits the theaters and HBOMax on November 19th.
