NOIRE Artist Spotlight: Blythe Dennis

Noire’s artist spotlight belongs to Blythe Dennis.

Blythe proves to be talented, with a rich deep and soothing voice. Her style can be likened to that of Lalah Hathaway, Jill Scott, and H.E.R., combined all into one.

NOIRE: Tell our readers about yourself as an artist.

BLYTHE: I like to think of myself as more of a creative, opposed to an artist. I love to create all kinds of things. But in this moment, my main focus is music. I take elements of different genres to create my own unique sound. I just love creating timeless music!

NOIRE: What made you get involved in music?

BLYTHE: Since I was a kid, I’ve loved music! I listened to it nonstop. I started out writing poetry. And, once I perfected that, I went on to start writing songs.

NOIRE: Who is your all-time favorite artist?

BLYTHE: Jilly from Philly!!!! Jill Scott is the epitome of a performer! I’ve studied her since I was a young girl. I love her presence and how she makes everyone feel warm.

NOIRE: What is your favorite genre of music? Your favorite song?

BLYTHE: If I had to choose, I’d say NeoSoul. It’s the genre that got me into songwriting. I’d say "The Way," by Jill Scott. It’s my favorite song to perform!

NOIRE: Is music important in the Black community? Why?

BLYTHE: I believe so. As a people, we’ve always used music to communicate with each other. We’ve created so much and contributed to the art of music as a whole. I think it’s so important for us to share our stories, the good and the bad. Music uplifts and heals. It’s a powerful tool.

NOIRE: What impact can music have on the Black community? On our Black youth?

BLYTHE: It can have both a good and bad impact. There’s lots of music out there that doesn’t speak to the goodness of who we are and our souls. It’s imperative that we have more positive and healthy representation. The youth absorb so much through music. I try to make music that is truthful and relatable. But most importantly I make music that is thought provoking and allows us all to look at ourselves in an introspective way.

NOIRE: What advice would you give aspiring musicians?

BLYTHE: I’d say study your craft. Perfect it. Listen to different genres. Expand your musical library. But most importantly, enjoy it! When you do what you love, it doesn’t feel like work at all. Never lose your love for the craft!
