61st Street!

The long overdue and 1st time Oscar nominated actress, Aunjanue Ellis joins the veteran thespian, Courtney B. Vance in the new series “61st Street” on AMC. The upcoming courtroom drama is slated to be a two-season television event with eight episodes per season. This crime genre is taken straight from the headlines. It follows “Moses Johnson”, a promising black high school athlete, who falls victim to the corrupt Chicago criminal justice system. Moses is mistakenly identified as a gang member responsible for “offing a cop” during a drug deal gone bad. Aunjanue takes on the role of “Martha Roberts”, a very convincing candidate on the campaign trail for alderman on the South Side of Chicago. She’s the wife of Courtney B Vance‘s character, “Franklin Roberts” a public defender with interrupted plans to retire. “Martha” was once a former stay-at-home mom to their autistic son, “David”. She is now torn between her burgeoning career in politics and the needs of her family. The storylines in this series are very detailed. The research into the city's history was thorough as well as personal. It references the experiences of executive producer - writer J. David Shanks, who grew up as a young Black man on the South Side and later became a Chicago police officer before entering the world of film and TV. This project is also brought to you by Hollywood’s shinning star Michael B. Jordan and his Outlier Society production company. He said that the “61st Street is an important commentary and observation of those impacted by the complicated history of race and the criminal legal system in America”. This series should definitely be on your watch list. It debuts on AMC on Sunday, April 10th at 9:00 pm CST, 10 p.m. ET/PT. The first two episodes will also stream on AMC+ and ALLBLK.
