Abbott Elementary

If you’re a fan of “A Black Lady Sketch Show” on HBO you are well aware of the standout comedic actress Quinta Brunson. Her nonchalant, dry humor was a consistent scene stealer every week. She has since written and executive produced the hilarious workplace mockumentary “Abbott Elementary” on ABC.  

This surprise television hit is definitely one of my favorite sitcoms of the season. To date this show has quadrupled its ratings and is now a record breaker for the ABC network. The series follows a group of new and veteran teachers at a financially struggling elementary school in Philadelphia. Even though the “fiscal funding struggle” is real - this funny faculty group finds a way to make us laugh through the pain of the educational inequalities felt by every urban school district around the country.  

The fictitious Willard Abbott school was named after Philly native superstar actor and rapper Willard “Will Smith” as well as Brunson’s real life 6th grade teacher Mrs. Joyce Abbott. This just goes to show you how important teachers are in our lives. We definitely need a national holiday and huge pay increase for all of our educators. They make huge sacrifices to shape the young minds of the future. 

Brunson’s Mother, was also an early educator in Philadelphia. Her experiences inspired some of the storylines in this series that features: “Everybody Hates Chris star - Tyler James Williams, Janelle James, Chris Perfetti, Lisa Ann Walter and Sheryl Lee Ralph.
