Sunday Inspiration: If God Be For Us, Who Can Be Against Us?

If God be for us, then who can be against us? Roman's 8:31

What are we fighting for as Black people?  Is it equality? Or is it acceptance?

I've had many conversations through the years with people, as many of you have as well.  When discussing the state of Black America, we all have these differing opinions. Some Blacks believe that we must be diverse and interact with other cultures.  Some believe that all Black institutions are corrupt and can't provide anything good and will never do anything right.

In all these conversations, a few words always stand out.. right, better, good, quality.  This is what many believe is provided to them if they engage with white America.  When we celebrate the first Black to accomplish something in a white dominated field,  are we celebrating an accomplishment? Or are we celebrating meeting a standard set by whites?  What message does that send to our people?  It reads that we aren't anything unless we meet their standards.

The topic reminds me of the Israelites that God delivered out of bondage and captivity.  They didn't want to be mistreated and be slaves, but they also were psychologically damaged.  They were afraid to exist on their own.  They didn't want to be uncomfortable in their new way of life  and mostly because all they knew was captivity. We must come out of the wilderness (Numbers13-14). So too with some of Black America.  We ask the question, If God be for us, then who can be against us?  God has always been for us, but we are against us!

We are running in all different directions as a people, not realizing that if we learn to love ourselves first, then we can walk into situations, relationships, and partnerships without having to compromise who we are. We also must pursue the right type of economic wealth.  Our focus must change! Instead of buying things that show we are wealthy, we must begin to invest in things that make us wealthy.

Our communities are the first investment we must make.  We lose money everyday because our communities are suffering.   We think it doesn't affect us, but our tax dollars are used to fund the very things we set up billions of programs to prohibit.  Yet the cycle of poverty, incarceration, generational instability, and fatherless households continue.

Yes, racism, discrimination, sexism, classicism, etc. all exist, but as we all know, we can only control our individual selves.  These things will always exist.  Just like there is light, there will be darkness.  Just like there is goodness, there will be evil.  We can't control it, only ourselves.

However, we must begin to believe and stand firm on the promises of God.  He will never leave or forsake us.  Yet, our goals and thoughts have to change.  God has given us unlimited power over all things on this earth, but we have to have faith.  And with faith comes work.

Stop asking man to give you what is already yours!  It's time to realize we are only bound because we won't take off the chains and live in the land God promised us that flows with milk and honey.

Let's be for us! Amen.
