NOIRE Kwanzaa Honorees: Dr. Kizzmekia Corbett, Immunologist, Covid-19 Vaccine Producer, Kuumba (Creativity)

“To always do as much as we can, in the way we can, in order to leave our community more beautiful and beneficial than we inherited it.”

When the COVID-19 pandemic broke out, Immunologist Dr. Corbett dove into the virus, as opposed to running away. She relied on her studies and research of past forms of coronavirus diseases and collaborated with a team of other immunologists.

In result, Dr. Corbett and her team created a formula for a vaccine, then partnered with Moderna for the manufacturing, testing and essential approval of the vaccine for public use. All was achieved in record time compared to the usual timeline to make a vaccine.

The highly renowned Dr. Anthony Fauci, Chief Medical Advisor to President Joe Biden, said: "Kizzy is an African American scientist who is right at the forefront of the development of the vaccine… has "been central to the development of the Moderna mRNA vaccine and the Eli Lilly therapeutic monoclonal antibody that were first to enter clinical trials in the U.S.

“Her work will have a substantial impact on ending the worst respiratory-disease pandemic in more than 100 years.”

Dr. Corbett and her team’s “creation” of the mRNA-1273 Moderna vaccine continues to save millions of lives today.
